Top-Notch Heating & Cooling Services in Charlottesville, VA

Your house is a safe space for your family, and it needs to fulfill this function regardless of the temperature outside. Even at the peak of summer or in the middle of winter, the temperature indoors must stay stable enough for everyone in your household to stay comfortable. Your HVAC system is central to this task.

That being said, we at Zephyr can assist you when it comes to heating and cooling system installation and upkeep. We offer the following services:

  • Home Energy Evaluation: Also known as a home energy audit, this service is designed to give homeowners an accurate breakdown of how they use energy at home. You see, air leaks—usually in the form of gaps and holes around the doors, windows, and other sections of the house—allow cooled or heated air to escape. Your HVAC unit, then, needs to double its output and consume more energy to maintain the temperature inside your home. A home energy evaluation is the first step in making your property more energy-efficient.
  • Heating Replacement and Repair: Your furnace, heat pump, or other heating units should be well suited to the needs of your property. Our company offers a wide range of heating options for commercial and residential properties in Charlottesville.
  • Cooling Replacement and Repair: An air conditioning unit is a must-have during the warmer months. Find the best options for your property and lifestyle with help from technicians from Zephyr.

Zephyr is quite simply the best - after having multiple other local companies and contractors come in and waste our money by doing a bunch of work that did not solve our HVAC problems, we tried Zephyr and have been 100% loyal ever since. Not only have they been able to address some significant temperature differentials between rooms in our home, but they've been wonderful and responsive to timely issues in addition to maintenance. 100% recommend Jessie & his team.

Jesse and team have always been smart, thoughtful, reliable and dedicated to your long term cost-effective comfort. In this very weird time, while we are sheltering in place, Jesse walked me through my own repair, after dropping parts off on my porch. Highly recommend.

This is the company to use for HVAC. The whole experience from start to finish was GREAT! I asked for options when replacing the the heat pump, and Jesse gave me 3 detailed options that I could choose from. I chose the middle option and could not be happier. Some things that are surprising these days- communication is great, they show up when expected, they pay attention to the details, and it is clear that they care about the job.

Through Square's Feedback

1) Knowledge level; speaking from a customer's perspective, I felt like I was getting straight talk rather than the usual load of facts with a dash of B.S. added into the mix.
2) Jesse showed me rather told me. Where he suspected a problem, he showed me where and why. This added to the company's credibility.

Furnace issues- received several emails recommending an HVAC service to call- got a few companies to choose from- Zephyr had worked in my neighborhood, apparently many times, and not one negative review. I called on the Friday after Thanksgiving and was informed that it was holiday hours time but they'd still be glad to help. HOWEVER, they also offered to loan me heaters until Monday when the service call rates went back to normal. Who does that? Zephyr did! They came today, fixed my furnace, charged me the lowest rate for service call and nothing extra. Amazing. Nice, personable, and knowledgeable- highly recommend this company! Spread the word...

We installed two single head Mitsubishi ductless systems - one serving the kitchen area on the first floor and a second serving a bedroom on the second floor. These systems provide great heat output, easy operation and maintenance and great efficiency - perfect to make these spaces more comfortable and safe!

We recovered the existing refrigerant, disconnected the electrical and refrigerant systems and made them safe for the project and then removed two outdoor units so that Pollard could dig a 15 foot pit and remove an underground oil tank and remediate the site. We returned after Pollard's work was complete to reinstall the outdoor units and return them to service.

Despite our attempts to make repairs, the system would never function correctly. So we worked with our distributor and factory technical advisors to rule out systemic problems and identified the culprit as a faulty outdoor expansion valve. Given the unit's history of repairs and improper function, Zephyr replaced the outdoor unit. We recovered the refrigerant, disconnected and removed the old outdoor unit and installed a new heat pump with a new warranty. We performed all of the standard pressure and evacuation tests to ensure proper function and returned the system to service.

Our visit to Steven's home was less about tools and more about looking, listening and poking around - a really scientific start! After he discussed the problem and showed me around, we started to really look for the how the duct system was designed and installed. Luckily he had photos of the basement before it was finished, which was key as one photo showed a major secondary trunk that we likely would have missed otherwise.

Using the photos we were able to identify the spot above the ceiling where the secondary trunk broke off from the main trunk. And then we started to work backwords - we counted the total number of supply registers and using some standard numbers for the cubic feet per minute of each supply, we determined a roughly total of the airflow the system could handle - 1900 CFM, roughly a 5 ton system.

On a 3 ton system capable of moving roughly 1200 CFM.

The furnace blower is not capable of moving enough air to reach the far side of Steven's home.

So Steven is strategically adjusting the supply registers throughout the house to find an acceptable balance between both sides of the house and between the basement and main level.

So far we have been able to close the gap from 6-7 degrees to 3-4 degrees on some of the coldest days of the year - which is not perfect but is the best we can achieve without major changes.

Over the course of several visits (yes, this boiler challenged us), we replaced a failed circulator pump, two thermal fuses, a pressure switch and a delay on make timer. We also completed a major cleaning of the heat exchanger and burners.

Why? We discovered that several isolation valves - including one from the auto-fill - had become blocked or frozen in place. This caused the system to run low on water which we believe contributed to the failed pump. Once we replaced the pump, the boiler system ran for several hours and then shut off again. This led to us to the first thermal fuse and our first call to the manufacturer - Weil-Mclain.

WM provided us with a clean, complete copy of the manual for this boiler and confirmed that the thermal fuse was indeed 228 Celsius or roughly 450 degrees F which is very HOT! We sourced the thermal fuse, replaced it and the boiler fired and ran for several more hours - then shut down again.

A second call with WM and we learned that the most likely cause of repeated thermal fuse failure is a clogged heat exchanger. We also received a warning to be careful during the cleaning because replacement parts for major components may not be available.

So we returned with a second thermal fuse, cleaning supplies and plenty of patience. We left with a fully functioning boiler system - bled of air, all valves and zones operating, new parts, a clean heat exchanger, and a new circulator pump.

What did we learn? We have wonderful clients with patience and faith in us. And that good partners such as Weil-Mclain and Ferguson allowed us to identify and source the correct replacement parts from out of our local area.

Clean outdoor coils transfer heat more efficiently, which means your system operates more efficiently. When your coils are clogged with pollen, dirt, leaves, and grass, they cannot efficiently cool or heat your home. But they can be cleaned and returned to efficient service with no damage done to the coil.

We replaced a 28 year old Trane heat pump system that had a modified zoning system with a modern, true variable speed (indoor and outdoor) American Standard heat pump system. We matched this digital system to a digital comfort control that delivered the full capability of the existing zoning system.

Our client was concerned about extremely uncomfortable temperatures in her kids' rooms - one unbearably hot and the other too cold. She also complained of uneven temperatures in the master bedroom. We completed an ACCA Manual J load calculation to determine the needed airflow in each room and adjusted or added dampers to balance the airflow. We also repaired the return air duct from the master bedroom to improve airflow back through the system. These changes also reduced total static pressure in the system which will help efficiency and system longevity. Within days, under extreme cold outdoor temperatures - our client reported greatly improved comfort in her childrens' room and in the master suite.

The photos tell the story of why regular maintenance is so important. On a routine maintenance we found a crack in the combustion wall. By the time we returned with the replacement, the crack was almost full depth of the ceramic wall. We replaced the entire chamber, cleaned it from top to bottom and returned the system to service.

These photos show either refrigerant line set ports not sealed, or not sealed properly. Line set ports should be sealed with some form of Thumb Gum, basically like playdough. This is important because a typical air handler operates in negative pressure, this means it will pull air from unconditioned spaces, through these ports, (if not sealed correctly) which bypasses the filter and enters your system and home.
