HVAC lifespan prediction – the holy grail or the witches’ brew? Sadly, our industry can only offer broad ranges. A heat pump system should operate between 10 – 15 years. Furnaces, gas or oil, can last for 20 or more years. The different ranges reflect the varied installation, operation and maintenance conditions of the equipment. Unlike buying a car, where the client purchases a factory built model delivered to the dealer, buying an HVAC system is like buying the engine, the transmission, the body and the fuel system from the factory and, then, having the car dealer put it all together in your driveway. In short, the skills and knowledge of your HVAC professional can make a big difference in both how long a system lasts and how well it performs during its lifetime.
